Advantages of Picture-in-Picture Technology

Picture-in-Picture (PiP) technology allow videographers to present two things to the relevant parties in a legal situation—the exhibit itself and the deponent’s reaction to the exhibit. This can be extraordinarily beneficial in circumstances in which a deponent is verbally reconstructing a scene (such as a medical operation) or reacting to evidence.

For instance, PiP would help strip a lot of the ambiguity out of testimony that relies heavily on directionality and situational understanding. Such as a deponent describing a car accident. Rather than relying on strictly, “I was heading this way when the truck side-swiped me, knocked my car into this lane and hit this other car,” and reconstructing the scene separately, the relevant parties can watch in real-time as the deponent draws the progression of their accident, providing a visual as well as verbal testimony.

There are, in fact, many practical uses for PiP in which an exhibit and a deponent’s reaction can be simultaneously shown to tremendous effect. All capabilities are live, so no lag time.

Why should you apply PiP? Glad you asked.

Seamless Deponent Interaction

PiP enables videographers to display the exhibit and the deponent’s interactions with that exhibit simultaneously, rather than flipping between the two. This enhances video evidence and tells a more cohesive story. The exhibit is typically kept to the larger of the screens so it can be viewed in enhanced detail, with the smaller of the screens reserved for the deponent.

Clear Video of Exhibits

Picture-in-Picture technology allows exhibits to be captured clearly, without the traditional distractions of lighting issues, focus delays, or disorientation as the videographer switches from the exhibit to the deponent and back again. This enables the audience to remain present and engaged with the evidence being discussed.

Interaction/Manipulation of Exhibits

In those instances where exhibits need to be handled or manipulated by the deponent (to draw on a map or circle relevant aspects of a document), this can be done in real-time without interrupting the flow of the testimony and maintaining the coherence of the narrative.

Enhancing Testimony Impact

Visual information is often critical, and nuances such as the deponent’s emotional response to certain exhibits can make a world of difference. PiP technology allows counselors to preserve the emotional impact without breaks in rhythm or flow, which could be a deciding factor in the overall case.
